Do you have a favorite color?

This is a fun question. For those of us who have been trained to overcome our preferences, I suggest that we look back to our childhood and think about which crayons we used the most and which we neglected in our crayon boxes. My favorite crayon was purple. My least favorite was sea foam green.

This question has serious implications. Designers are usually trained to look at the color spectrum as a pianist would look at a keyboard. Just as there isn’t a bad note, there isn’t a bad color on a designer’s palette. Knowing what my preferences are, I always check to see if I’m selecting too much purple and not enough green when working on a branding project.

We should likewise be wary of people who express their likes and dislikes without relating them to a brand strategy. If the design works to bring the brand story and expression forward then it succeeds; if it doesn’t, it fails.
